What started with a small core volunteer group serving 50 children has grown to over 100 volunteers serving 175 children every M-F all summer long. Trietsch runs one of the largest KEF sites, and has become a training church for groups new to the ministry. This year, we will put the 75,000th sandwich into the hands of a young child.
Kids Eat Free is a wonderful ministry for families, and a great first-mission for young people. Its power lies in the quiet, anonymous nature of the work. Families come to the church, make the sandwiches, and deliver them to the children in nearby Highland Acres Mobile Home Community. Your family will enjoy the few hours it takes to make and deliver those sandwiches, and you will have the opputunity to have real-world experiences that lead to discussions about greatfulness and service.
Last year, a Highland Acres parent asked the name of our church as lunches were distributed. He knew it had to be a church group, because "only the love of Jesus would make all of you come year after year to feed these children." They will know us by our love! That's what make Kids Eat Free one of the most powerful, yet quiet missions at Trietsch.
So, can you be the hands (lunch makers) or the feet (lunch takers) of Jesus this summer? Maybe you could be the heart (donations and lunchtime prayers)? There's room for everyone to be a part of Kids Eat Free. Come and help us celebrate that 75,000 lunch milestone!
Kids Eat Free - Changing Lives with Lunch
For some children in the Greater Lewisville area, the end of the school year could mean a summer without lunch. But thanks to the CCA Kids Eat Free program, almost 1000 children ages 3 to 18 receive a healthy, balanced lunch Monday through Friday.
Trietsch is a major participant in Kids Eat Free feeding over 100 children each weekday during the summer. Over the 11-week program, Trietsch will serve almost 6,000 meals!
This is a fantastic opportunity for families, small groups, Sunday School classes, individuals – anyone who wants to know the joy of being the hands and feet of Christ for children in our own town.
How can you get involved? It’s as easy as 1-2-20
1 — Take 1 hour to make lunches. There’s no shopping required – just come to the church at the time you choose and follow the simple instructions to assemble lunches.
2 — Spend 2 hours delivering lunches. Take the food that has been prepared to Highland Acres and watch the smiles break out all around you.
20 — Give $20 to feed one child for one week. All donations of any size go directly to the program.
Kids Eat Free runs from June 14 through August 20. To volunteer, register at http://www2.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=trietsch_kids_eat_free or sign up in the Connection Center on Sunday mornings from May 16 - June 6 or in the church office to reserve your place in this life-changing ministry.
What else you need to know:
Maybe you aren't free during the day. There are several ways you can help:
- 1. Donate some money to buy the supplies. It costs us $400 a week to feed 175 children all five days.
Do you realize that's about 46 cents per lunch? What am amazing investment!
- Tell your friends about Kids Eat Free, and get them to sign up.
Are you the member of a group? Sunday School class, sports team, scout group, social group? Sign up together to help. It's fun!
- Have a party and ask all attendees to bring KEF supplies as admission: pudding cups, lunch-size bags of chips/cookies, granola bars, fruit snacks...if your child likes to eat it for lunch, the KEF kids would love to eat it, too.
Since KEF has grown, the church is allowing us to use the OUR DAILY BREAD Sunday School room in the Faith Voyage building for all meal prep and supply storage. This is great news for KEF, because there will be a dedicated space for the summer, and it has easy ramp access for moving supplies in and out of the building.
