Daily Reading April 11 May 2, 2012

Jesus follows the rebuke of Peter with an astounding word about the ways of God. “Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.” The ways of God are eternal; the ways of the world are temporary. What in your life is temporary, and what is eternal?

Clearly, Jesus reveals himself as the messiah that must suffer for the sins of the whole world. From now on, they will see him as the Son of God. Peter does not want Jesus to pay the steep price for humanity and confronts Jesus. Peter is thinking in the limited experience of this life. Jesus rebukes Peter and accuses him of being part of the world’s standards (Satan), “you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” In what way have you limited your thinking? Can you pray that God would open your mind and set you on the divine things of God?

Monday, April 9 —Read Mark 8:22-26. This is an interesting passage where Jesus heals the blind man of Bethsaida. The passage shows that the first touch of Jesus only heals part of the blind man’s blindness. It took an additional touch before the man could see clearly. Some believe that Mark sees this healing as a metaphor for the spiritual healing that Jesus is offering all of humanity. At first even the disciples have a hard time understanding, but finally after experiencing the resurrected Christ, they believe and others follow. What needs the healing touch of Jesus in your life? Is it a relationship, a job, a financial situation, a health issue, forgiveness or something else? Are you willing to offer this to Jesus for a second touch? Do you need to have your eyes opened to the truth of Christ?

2 Very early on the first day of the week, they were on their way to the tomb. It was just after sunrise. 3 They asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb?”
4 Then they looked up and saw that the stone had been rolled away. The stone was very large.
5 They entered the tomb. As they did, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe. He was sitting on the right side. They were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. But he has risen! He is not here! See the place where they had put him.
Daily Reading – April 6 – Good Friday April 6, 2012
Posted by tmumc in : Daily Readings , add a commentFriday, April 6 — Read Mark 8:11-21. Again Jesus must deal with the challenges of the Pharisees and the lack of understanding from his disciples. In verse 21, Jesus says, “Do you not yet understand?” How long will it take for us to understand the working of God in this world? We worry about so much. We ask for signs. For you, what stands in the way of total devotion to Christ in all things? Are you willing to give these things up for Christ?

What are you willing to ignore to hear the words of Jesus? Can you name the things you would be willing to skip to worship the King of Kings?
Daily Reading – April 4 April 4, 2012
Posted by tmumc in : Daily Readings , add a commentWednesday, April 4 — Read Mark 7:31-37. This passage describing the healing of the deaf mute is probably included because of the statement made by the disciples in verse 37, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.” Why are the disciples still amazed? By now, they have seen Jesus’ authority over nature, illness, demons and death. What do they need to believe? What do we need to believe? Why do we doubt when things get difficult?

The divine power of Jesus was effective no matter how close Jesus might have been to the person. The word of Jesus was sufficient for every good work. In what areas do you need the divine power of Jesus today? How can the word of Jesus heal and free you for a life of joy?
