Ephesians 2:14-16 — The Word from the Bible (NRSV)
14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it.

Outlive Your Life
“The Nazareth Manifesto” (Week 1 of 6)
Today’s Scripture: Luke 4:16-22; NRSV
16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’
January 16 Daily Reading February 6, 2012
Posted by tmumc in : Daily Readings, Sermon Series , add a commentMonday, January 16 – Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-7. This passage really should be read in conjunction with chapter 12. Paul is dealing with conflict between members of the faith community based on egos. Chapter 13 is Paul’s answer basically saying that love is the most excellent way to relate in every circumstance. Without love we are nothing. Read this passage inserting Christ in place of the word love. Read the passage a second time placing your name in the place of love – claim each aspect of love for your life and relationships. Which of these qualities do you need in relating to others? Pray that God will help you become what you have read.

The Ups and Downs of Marriage
The Threefold Cord (Week 2 of 2)
Today’s Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
9Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. 11Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? 12And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken. And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
The Threefold Cord
The writer of Ecclesiastes uses three metaphors to exhort the importance of relationship. The first is the advantage of having two working on a project. Not only do they have the advantage of the multiplied effort two people working over the efforts of one, but they have the added safeguard against potential danger. “For if they fall one will lift up the other…” Second, two have ability to keep each other warm with by sharing body heat. A person’s body heat dissipates more quickly than if they are in contact with another. Finally, two are far more effective in fending off an attacker. The two may have inferior strength, but their coordinated efforts will most likely prevail.
Each of these metaphors makes logical sense. It is easy to imagine each of these examples and the benefit of relationships and community.

Today’s Scripture: Deuteronomy 24:15

Why A Baby?
WHY? Christmas Mysteries (Week 4 of 5)
Today’s Scripture: Luke 2:1-7
1 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Practical Atheist Series Begins Sunday January 7, 2011
Posted by tmumc in : Sermon Series , add a commentBeginning this Sunday, January 9th, I am beginning a series of sermons on Christian beliefs. Using the approach of Craig Groeschel in his book Christian Atheist, we will ask questions about worry, forgiveness, change and the mercy of God. There are times when we doubt and worry about our faith. We have questions about God and the Church. Do these questions lead us into the area of unbelief? Many of us believe God exists, yet few of us live like God exists. If we really believed, wouldn’t things be different? These sermons are a scriptural analysis of our beliefs from a culturally relevant point of view.
