Trading Your Sacrifices for Blessings

By now, I’m sure most of you have heard about the Lenten program being promoted at Trietsch.  The name of the program is “Trading Sacrifice for Blessing.”  Information was provided in the black registration pads as well as Pastor John introducing the idea in all three services for a few weeks and as an insert in the bulletin.  This note is being provided to ensure that the program and its purpose are absolutely clear.  When we make a sacrifice for Lent, we cultivate a spiritual discipline, reminding us of the importance of spiritual truths over earthly goods. As we approach Easter, it is fitting to meditate on the serious subject of the sacrifice that Jesus made to save us from eternal death and separation from God. He willingly and single-mindedly embarked on His mission to teach the truth and to die on the cross as the ultimate and lasting sacrifice for our sins.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer — through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial.  Often times we see this activity as purely a personal event between us and God.  This Lent, we encouraged you to make a daily sacrifice. However, we asked you to take that sacrifice one step further — to trade that sacrifice for a blessing. What we have decided to do this year at Trietsch is to broaden our view of this special time on the Christian calendar.  Many have anonymously displayed their “Sacrifice for Blessing” outside the Sanctuary entrance. By recording the sacrifices and the blessings that occur out of this activity, we are confident that the church will be energized and strengthened through these visible acts of Christian service.  Keep in mind that all reporting is strictly anonymous.  The goal is for God to be glorified and for us to be part of His blessing.

Even though we are already into Lent, you can still participate in this church-wide effort by displaying your “Sacrifice for Blessing.” Be sure and take a look at the other ideas from other members or groups in the church that adorn the columns outside the sanctuary doors.  As new ideas are shared, they will be posted for your review and edification.  Keep in mind that our sacrifices often times provide benefit for others and when this occurs “blessings” abound.

Consider how what you gain by sacrifice can be used to bless others through prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. If you sacrifice something that earns you more time in your day, such as giving up Facebook or watching TV, consider using that time in prayer or in service for the community. If you choose to sacrifice something that saves you money, take that money and put it to good use blessing others. Let’s plan on much celebration at Trietsch this Lenten season through the acts of sacrifice by us and the blessings experienced by all involved.  For in blessing others, you also bless yourself. And the magnitude of the meaning of Easter will overwhelm your spirit.

You can anonymously write how you will embrace the spirit of Sacrifice for Blessing this Lent on a card to be displayed outside the Sanctuary throughout Lent. Cards are available at this display if you would like to fill one out.
