Small Gestures Matter

Linda Norman received a thank you note from No Selfie Saturday last year, and now she's helped organize the event! Read her story and sign up to serve on October 21 at TMUMC.ORG/no-selfie.

One card. One minute. One person.

Sometimes, we think that our small gestures are just that – small. For Linda Norman, however, one small gesture changed not only her life, but many of the lives that then were touched by her actions and her heart, all because of one small thank you note.

During our services two years ago, the worship team had placed small notecards into the bulletin and asked each person in the congregation to write at least one thank you note to one of the many organizations participating in our "No Selfie Saturday" day of service. The gesture took only a minute or so, but when Linda Norman of Humane Tomorrow received a card, it touched her heart.

Linda and her husband, Chris, were married at Trietsch over 20 years ago. They had been active, but as can happen, had become disconnected. Linda was working at Humane Tomorrow, formerly the Humane Society of Flower Mound, and the agency was one of the many organizations with which Trietsch participated on our 2015 and 2016 "No Selfie Saturday."

When Linda received the thank you cards from our congregation, it stirred her heart. She was then invited to have a table at the Blessing of the Animals service, bringing a couple of foster dogs and information to pass out as well. Linda said that those actions revealed to her what an INCREDIBLE servant's heart our church had and that she wanted to be a part of that service to others.

Linda and Chris began attending Trietsch services again and very soon, Linda was immersed in the mission work that she has always loved doing. She joined the Missions Team, serving on the "Connect" branch.  The Mission Team has 4 areas of focus:

  • Connect
  • Celebrate
  • Communicate
  • Educate

As a team member on the Connect side, her job is to help identify organizations with which we can partner and look for ways to connect our members not just with one project, but with each person's PASSION for serving and the area in which they are most interested.

In addition, Linda has taken the thank you cards that Humane Tomorrow has received from Trietsch and posted them at the office for others to see, even scanning in and emailing them to volunteers that are not regularly in the office.  She has said that it has been such a powerful and positive gesture that she has had others in the office ask about our church and want to come visit with her!

As Linda is now involved with the Steering Committee for "No Selfie Saturday," as well as the Mission Team and such additional projects as our floodbuckets for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), many other people have received the loving and grace-filled blessings of God's love through her actions, which all started from a simple thank you note written during a Sunday morning worship service.

This Sunday, we will have those same notecards in our bulletin. We encourage you to remember this story of the far reaching effects that the love and generosity of our Lord can have when we all do our part in His beautiful story. Maybe even take the time to do just a little more….
