Alyssa Shibata shares why she decided to lead a Life Group in Dallas. Browse all open Life Groups at TMUMC.ORG/life.
To prepare for marriage, my husband and I took the quiz from the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman to learn how we can best communicate with and serve each other. My love language is quality time. I had never thought about it before, but there's nothing I love more than spending time with the people I love. But it does have to be "quality," meaning phones down, laptop shut, and TV off (I know--very countercultural to my generation).
This explains why family game night has always meant so much to me. Sometimes I drive my family crazy because after I meal I'd rather just sit at the table and get lost in conversation than immediately move on to the next event of the day. I'm always up for a spirited debate, and sometimes I'll switch viewpoints halfway through the conversation just to keep the dialogue going. I love quality time and quality conversations.
So what does all of this have to do with Life Groups? I decided to lead a Life Group because they are the most genuine quality time I have ever seen in the life of this church. There is something holy about a group of random people coming together to discuss their relationship with God. What you share doesn't have to be mushy, dramatic, or awe-inspiring (although sometimes it is). It just has to be honest. It doesn't get more "quality" than that.
I also value cross-generation connection. Something I've always loved about Trietsch is the wide span of generations present when you walk through the door. It's not a Baby Boomer church or a Millennial church. It's not exclusively families or exclusively singles. You will come in contact with people across every walk of life within 15 minutes of entering the building on a Sunday morning. My hope for my Life Group is to get a smattering of that rich breadth of experiences. I would love for men and women of all ages to be present in my Life Group. We can learn from each other and make genuine friends with people who are 30 years older or younger. I think that's the beauty of Life Groups.
I am excited to be hosting a Life Group starting on October 11. We will meet in Dallas at 7 am. I know it seems strange to have a Trietsch group meet in Dallas, but I did this intentionally. There are so many of us who work or even live in Dallas; I wanted to make my Life Group a convenient start to the day for those heading downtown. So if you haven't been invited to join a Life Group yet, consider this to be your official invitation to join mine. If you have a friend or spouse who lives or works in Dallas, please share this with them. All are welcome.
We will meet on Wednesdays at 7 am at Ascension Coffee on Oak Lawn Avenue starting October 11. I look forward to meeting you. Sign up for my group at TMUMC.ORG/life. I'm the first group under "Wednesdays."
